WASHINGTON, D.C. — A US Park Police officer is suffering minor injuries after a mishap in Northwest D.C. on Thursday, where he shot himself in the foot after being attacked by a raccoon.

The officer was trying to fend off the raccoon on Horse Stable Lane. While struggling with the animal, he shot himself. It’s not clear if he was trying to shoot the raccoon, or his gun discharged by mistake.

Another officer who responded to the scene “dispatched” the raccoon, according to the US Park Police. The officer who was injured was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Animal Control will retrieve the raccoon.
