UPDATED: Two MPD officers in serious condition after I-295 crash

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two DC Police officers are in serious condition at Washington Hospital Center after they stopped to help the driver of a disabled vehicle and were involved in an accident.

The accident involved three vehicles with four patients, and DC Fire reports that Medevac was dispatched to transport some of the injured. The crash took place near the 11th Street Bridge.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted that her thoughts and prayers were with the two injured officers.

MPD has reported, “I-295 northbound lanes 1 & 2 are blocked heading toward the I-695 westbound. Eastbound I-695 travel lanes are open heading toward 295 southbound.”

UPDATE: Police say that both officers struck are veteran officers who suffered trauma to the lower part of their bodies during the accident. They will remain in the hospital overnight.

They and the driver of the disabled vehicle who they were struck while helping were taken to Washington Hospital Center. The driver who struck them was taken to a different hospital.
