WASHINGTON, D.C. – After the tragic mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, officials in the District are responding to the violence, as well as taking precautions for the citizens of D.C.

In response to the events in Orlando, Mayor Muriel Bowser issued the following statement:

“This morning, our hearts are heavy after hearing about the tragedy in Orlando. Just yesterday, we held the annual Capital Pride Parade, a celebration of the rich diversity and contributions of the LGBTQ community in the District of Columbia.

“Ahead of today’s Capital Pride Festival, I have been briefed by MPD Chief Cathy Lanier about increased security measures. Today as always, we will not be deterred by hate as we gather to celebrate love.”

The Metropolitan Police Department also tweeted before today’s Capital Pride event that they were going to increase police presence at the festival today.
