Nationals belt out win, begin road trip in Philly Monday
Washington DC— Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright shocked a sellout crowd at Nationals Park Saturday when he socked a two-out double that scored two runs as St. Louis went on to win 9-4.
On Sunday, a similar scenario presented itself when starter Michael Wacha stepped to the plate in the second inning with two runners on.
One key difference, Nationals pitcher Steven Strasburg had seen what happened Saturday night.
The Nationals ace started Wacha off with a curve ball when many people would be expecting a fastball. He jumped out to an 0-2 count then put away his counterpart with a strikeout.
Things just seem to go the Nationals’ way when Strasburg (9-0) is on the mound. For the 15th time this year, the Nats have used a Strasburg stat to collect a win, 10-2 over the Cards Sunday.
The Nationals broke through in the 4th inning when Bryce Harper followed a Michael Taylor double with an RBI single. Ryan Zimmerman moved him to third with a double. Wilson Ramos singled with two outs to plate them both and put the Nationals up 3-1.
The Cardinals tightened the game up by scratching out a run in the 7th but reliever Felipe Rivero was able to strand a few baserunners and keep the score 3-2.
After that the Nats got homer happy. Anthony Rendon belted his 4th of the year to open the bottom of the 7th. The Nats loaded the bases and then emptied them with a Jayson Werth pinch-hit grand slam, also in the 7th. Finally, Ramos tacked on a 2-run blast in the 8th to finish out the scoring.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first when Brandon Moss took a 3-2 Strasburg offering and smoked it to right to put the Cardinals up 1-0 in the 4th inning.
The Nationals begin a three-city road trip that begins Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies.
