Officials investigate two arson fires in Greenbelt

GREENBELT, MD – The Prince George’s County Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating two set fires in Greenbelt that appear to have similarities. Both of the fires occurred in the Franklin Square Apartments on Thursday evening.

The fires occurred within just minutes of each other in kitchens of vacant apartments. The 3-story apartment buildings were in close proximity to each other. The first fire occurred on Thursday night at 5805 Cherrywood Lane. The second fire followed closely at 5819 Cherrywood Lane. Firefighters arrived and both fires were extinguished without incident.

There were no injuries in either, but, according to the Red Cross, 4 families consisting of 14 people were displaced as a result of the fires. The total losses of the fires is estimated at $11,000.


Prince George’s County Fire Investigators are asking for the publics help in identifying who is responsible for these arson fires. Anyone with information is asked to call our Arson Tip Line at 301-77-ARSON (301-772-7766). Callers may remain anonymous.
