Police charge man in District Heights homicide

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, MD – The Prince George’s County Police Department has charged a suspect in Saturday’s fatal shooting in District Heights, MD. According to police, Diartianan Rivers, 27, has been charged with shooting Thomas Barnes, 52.

On the morning of May 21st , patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1900 block of Rochell Avenue.  When they arrived, they found Thomas Barnes outside in a parking lot suffering from a gun shot wound. He would later die from those injuries.

After a preliminary investigation, detectives believed that Barnes ran outside of his home after hearing his car being started in the parking lot. Once there, he confronted the suspect, Diartianan Rivers. Police believe that Barnes was shot during that confrontation. Rivers then fled in Barnes’ SUV. He was spotted by the Metropolitan Police Department with the stolen car in Southeast D.C. The officers pursued him into Prince George’s County where he was arrested.

According to police, Rivers is charged with first degree and second degree murder. He was admitted his involvement in the fatal shooting, as well as stealing the SUV. Currently, he’s being held without bail at the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.
