WASHINGTON, D.C. - According to the Metropolitan Police Department, five separate shootings occurred today in the district since approximately 1:00pm Monday.

Late Monday, at a joint press conference called by Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Cathy Lanier, the string of shootings was called a 'series of horrific violence.' Bowser added that the level of violence displayed in the shootings was something that was not acceptable in the District.

In a span of four hours, these shootings left two dead and three injured.  The injured victims have been transported to local hospitals. Both of the fatal shootings occurred in Southeast, D.C. One of those shootings occurred in the 4800 block of Texas Avenue, Southeast. The other happened in the 100 block of 49th Street, Southeast.

Preliminary investigation into the two homicides indicate the two are related according to Lanier.

Bowser said plans have already been made to move police to 'areas of most concern.'

The other shooting incidents occurred in the 3700 block of Georgia Ave. NW. and near the intersection of Fairlawn Ave. SE and Young SE Street. In the Georgia shooting one person was shot but is listed in stable condition. Two people were shot near Fairlawn, one received minor injuries while the other took a serious injury to the lower portion of their body but is expected to survive.
