Police arrest man after fatally stabbing father-in-law

LA PLATA, MD – Officers from the Charles County Police Department responded to reports of a stabbing in the 12800 block of Yates Place in La Plata, Maryland. When they arrived on the scene, they found John Edward Yates, 71, inside his house with multiple stab wounds. He died on the scene.

After a preliminary investigation, police found that the suspect, Deangelo Hemsley, 39, arrived at the house looking for his 12-year-old daughter. He confronted Yates upon arrival and stabbed him several times. Then, he forced his daughter into his car at knife point. The girl was able to get out of the car and escape on foot.

Officers were able to arrest Hemsley as he was attempting to flee. Deangelo Hemsley was transported to Charles County Detention Center and charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and kidnapping.

The investigation is ongoing.
