Officer charged after accidentally firing gun in school

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A school resource officer was indicted Monday on charges for firing a gun inside an Alexandria middle school in March, police say.

Officer Carl Savoy, 27, accidentally discharged his service weapon on March 13 inside his office at George Washington Middle School.

Police say no one was injured and classes continued as normal. Savoy contacted supervisor and school staff, and the Alexandria Police Department launched and investigation.

Savoy, who is a five year veteran of the department, was placed on routine administrative leave.

On Monday, a Grand Jury indicted Savoy.

Savoy is charged with two misdemeanors; reckless handling of a firearm and destruction of property.

Police say Savoy turned himself into law enforcement Monday afternoon and was released on his own recognizance.

Savoy is currently on administrative leave without pay from the Alexandria Police Department as a result of the charges, police say.
