Man struck; killed by train in Gaithersburg

GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- Montgomery County Police are undergoing a death investigation after a man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train at the Gaithersburg station, in the area of South Summit and Wells Avenue just before 2:00 Tuesday afternoon.

According to Montgomery County Fire Spokesperson, Pete Piringer, the train was on its way to Rockville with a passenger who was a having a medical emergency when it hit the man crossing the tracks.

“The guy was crossing at the crosswalk and according to the dispatch, he had his head down and next thing you know I just saw his body get thrown... the train was doing about 75mph.”, said witness, Richard.

He is a train enthusiast who just happened to be on the scene, along with a friend.
He says the occurrence of pedestrians being hit there is not unusual.

“We get people like that all the time, but this is my first time seeing that.”, he said.

Another witness, Stephan Monica, was inside the station when he said he was alerted by an old classmate, that a man had been hit.

“We went up and the poor fella was just. He was gone by that time... it was real sad.”, said Monica.

According to witnesses, the victim was not paying attention at the time he was struck.
Monica said, “He was doing a text while he was walking across the path.”

Witnesses said the man appeared to be in his 40s.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
