Officer struck while directing traffic after Sully accident

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Traffic on Route 28 near I-66 was seriously delayed and several people were injured after to a series of accidents early Thursday morning.

The first crash took place around 4:15 a.m. in Centreville and involved three vehicles — a box truck, a dump truck, and a sedan. The dump truck overturned in the crash and rolled onto the sedan, trapping the driver inside. All three drivers were injured, but none were seriously hurt.

This accident knocked power lines onto the road and caused traffic lights to go out, shutting down Route 28 in both directions for several hours. Officers arrived to direct traffic in the meantime, and one was hit by a car while he was doing so. The driver stayed on scene, and the officer’s injuries aren’t life-threatening.

Police ask anyone who witnessed either accident to call the CRU witness line at 703-280-0543.
