COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Police at the University of Maryland have charged a man in last week’s incident where a swastika was spray-painted onto a trash cart.

Ronald Alford, Sr., 52, has been charged with malicious destruction of property and a charge of disturbing the operations of a school. He’s also been banned from the school’s campus.

UMPD responded to Hagerstown Hall on Sept. 27 for reports of a hate bias incident, and found the swastika had been painted on the trash cart.

This follows a series of hate-based incidents at the university. Students demanded change after the on-campus homicide of Lt. Richard Collins III, a death which was investigated by the FBI as a possible hate crime but will not be prosecuted as one.
