FAUQUIER COUNTY, Va. — A two-seater aircraft crashed at Maples Field Airport on Sunday when it ran off the runway during landing and overturned, putting an 85-year-old passenger in the hospital.

Only two men were in the plane, the pilot, William Hargreaves, 45, and Donald Rhynalds, 85. Hargreaves was uninjured, but Rhynalds was flown to INOVA Fairfax.

The plane was a 1940 Fairchild R40-404, fixed-wing, single-engine, two-seater craft. Maples Field has a grassy runway, and the craft was trying to land when it ran off the left side, went into tall uncut grass and overturned.

Virginia State Police and the FAA are investigating.
