FAIRFAX CO., VA — A 23-year-old is facing several charges including carjacking.

Police say John Russell approached a driver around 6 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of East Drive and Telegraph Road where he pulled out a gun and made her get off her SUV.

Detectives say he sped off and the stolen SUV was spotted not too far on Edgehill Drive, where an officer tried pulling him over but he sped away striking a tree and four cars. At a dead end on Edgehill Drive, police say, he bailed out of the car and ran away.

Fairfax County Police used patrol officers, K9’s, and a helicopter as they searched the area for Russell. Nearby schools were put on “Secure the Building” status while other schools opened late.

Shortly after 8 a.m., the suspect was arrested at the intersection of Fairhaven Avenue and North Kings Highway. He’s been charged with carjacking, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony speed to elude, four counts of misdemeanor hit and run and driving on a suspended license.

Anyone who witnessed the initial carjacking or with additional information about this incident is asked to contact the Major Crimes Division at 703-246-7800.
