SILVER SPRING, Md. -- A father from Silver Spring will spend 40 years in prison for killing his two month old baby.
In February of 2014, at just seven weeks old, baby Amir Iman-Kouadio was taken to the hospital, he was injured and unresponsive, then later, taken off a ventilator, and pronounced dead.
His father, Adou Louis Kouadio, was found responsible and Thursday, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
“In this particular case, the injuries were so severe that they are the only kind of injuries that have been associated in other cases of children falling from three story buildings or children involved in high impact crashes,” explained Ramon Korionoff, with the Montgomery County State’s Attorneys office.
After the sentencing, Asli Iman, Amir’s mother, told DCW50 she was exhausted, but relieved. Iman said she still had many unanswered questions and pain surrounding the death of her son.
“I want to know how can you look your baby in the face and do that?!” Iman expressed.
At the time that 7 week old Amir was being abused, the mother was working and going to school fulltime. Amir’s father kept him during the day; A decision that still haunts Iman.
“All the time, all the time…For the longest, I blamed myself, I could have done this differently, I could have done that differently, it took a long time for me to forgive myself,” Iman shared, crediting her strength to her family and faith.
Prosecutors said this was not the first time, baby Amir was abused while in his father’s care.
Korionoff said experts in the field advise, if your baby is not old enough to crawl and move around on his or her own, but they have bruises, it is important to contact social services or a doctor immediately, because the bruises are coming from somewhere or someone.
