Man dies in officer-involved shooting in Capitol Heights

PRINCE GEORGE’S CO., Md. — Police are investigating a man’s death after he was fatally shot by a Prince George’s County officer early Thursday.

According to Prince George’s officials, the officers came upon two men who were sleeping in a running vehicle in the the 4100 block of Byers Street after getting a call about a suspicious car in the neighborhood. They went to the car and tried to wake the men.

A DC man identified as Alvin Young Jr., 39, tried to flee the car. The other man, Terrence Thomas Jr., 19, woke up and pulled a gun on the officer and passenger. The other officer says he feared for both of their lives and as a result discharged his service weapon twice into Thomas’ chest.

Young then ran, and was apprehended and taken into custody. The officers attempted CPR on Thomas, but he died on the scene.

No one else was injured during the incident.

Officials also say that evidence teams were able to recover the suspects’ weapons.
