ALEXANDRIA, Va. — More than 400 people were evacuated from a nine-story apartment building in Alexandria after cracks appeared on walls and columns and the building began to shake.

Some residents were allowed back into their homes around 7 p.m., but others have been temporarily displaced. Crews who responded to the scene described possible structural damage to the building, and continue to investigate.

The building’s gas and HVAC were turned off while crews looked through the building for an explanation. 180 units in total were evacuated.
