MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A man was sentenced to fifteen years in jail Wednesday after being found guilty of robbing a man in a bar of his iPhone, stabbing him multiple times when confronted, and then fleeing the bar.

Robel Haileselassie, 22, entered Odalis Restaurant & Bar last August and got in an argument with Gabriel Yohannes, the victim. The argument turned into a fight, with Haileselassie punching Yohannes in the face and then stealing his and his friend’s iPhone.

Another friend of theirs stopped Haileselassie and took back Yohannes’ phone before the man left the restaurant, but Yohannes went after him to get back his friend’s phone as well. Haileselassie then pulled out a knife and stabbed Yohannes several times.

Yohannes suffered potentially fatal stab wounds and retreated back into the restaurant. Haileselassie ran, but was tracked and apprehended by K9 units who had been called to the scene.

Haileselassie was convicted of first degree assault, but was initially also charged with attempted second degree murder, armed robbery, and theft.
