FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County Superintendent, Dr. Karen Garza, resigned this afternoon. Her last day with Fairfax County Public Schools is December 16, 2016.

Garza was the first woman to lead the school system in its history. According FCPS, she has been a transformational leader who has had a tremendous impact on the school district, employees and students.

“The School Board is extremely sorry to lose Dr. Garza, but is very grateful for her leadership since 2013. We wish her the very best in her next endeavor,” Fairfax County Board Chair Sandy Evans said.

During her leadership, Garza focused on student achievement, maintaining FCPS standards of excellence, to providing focused attention and action support to the most challenged schools in the district.

The School Board will soon name an interim Superintendent and in the coming weeks will provide details regarding a search process.
