WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A section of Beach Drive will close Thursday and not re-open until spring 2017 as part of the Park Service's planned three-year rehabilitation on that road.

The section that will close this week is from Tilden Street NW to where Beach Drive begins at Rock Creek & Potomac Parkway below the Omni Shoreham hotel. This part of the road will be closed 24/7 in both directions.

This closure is broken up into two phases, 1A and 1B.

"During 1A, Beach Drive will stay open between Piney Branch Parkway and Porter Street so vehicles can travel across the park," stated the Park Service in a release. "During 1B, this jog will close while it is reconstructed."

The paved multi-use trail will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists in the daytime. Between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., pedestrians and cyclists will need to plan an alternate route.
