Events held across the DMV to commemorate 9/11

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This weekend marks the 15th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Here is a list of events that are being held across the DMV to honor the victims of those attacks.


The 9/11 Heroes Run will take place at the Carl Sandburg Middle School on Saturday, September 10 at 9:00 a.m. The Heroes run occurs in more than 50 locations both in the U.S. and abroad each year. The proceeds from the race go to the Travis Manion Foundation, an organizations that helps veterans and their families by offering them opportunities o further their personal and professional goals. Some of the proceeds will also go to the Fairfax County Police Explorers and Armed Services Arts Partnership. The Police, Fire, and Sheriff 9/11 Memorial 5K run will be held on Saturday, September 10 starting at 6:00 p.m. Proceeds from the race will be donated to public safety and military support organizations, including the Fisher House Foundation, the Wounded Warriors Project, and the Survivor’s Fund. There is a fee of $25 to register. The race will be held at the Double Tree Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.

On Sunday, September 11, several a moment of silence will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. It will begin at 9:37 a.m. Arlington County will hang U.S. flags from the overpasses and buildings in a display of “Flags Across Arlington.”

Also in Arlington, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at Courthouse Plaza at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. That ceremony will honor the Arlington County police and firefighters who were first responders when the Pentagon was attacked on September 11th.


The Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department will be hosting the 2016 National Capital Region 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and 5K. The event starts at 8:47 a.m., but you can register on-site as early as 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10. The event will be held at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center at National Harbor.

Washington, D.C. 

The National Day of Service will be held on September 11th. Volunteers from over 50 nonprofit organizations will work to clean parks, revitalize playgrounds, sort food for food banks, and other service related activities. To learn more, you can visit their website here.

Also on September 11th, The Unity Walk will be held in Washington, D.C. People from all faiths and cultures will walk down Massachusetts Avenue, and visit different houses of worship along the way.
