Fairfax sheriff’s deputy ID’d after involvement in fatal shooting
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va — The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the deputy who shot and killed a man August 19 on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus.
The deputy is MDS Patrick McPartlin, who oversees prison transport for the sheriff’s office in their confinement division. WJLA has reported that according to a 2015 Commonwealth’s Attorney report, he was also involved in the death of inmate Natasha McKenna in February 2015.
The man killed August 19 is Jovany Martinez, 29, who is said to have initially approached a patrol officer at a gas station in Annandale. The officer apparently became concerned for Martinez’s mental health during the course of this conversation, and brought him to Inova Fairfax Hospital for evaluation.
After Martinez was later discharged with medical staff saying he was not in mental distress, police say he was escorted to the bus stop. Security staff at the hospital reported that Martinez took a sign post from the bus stop and began to use it as a weapon, striking a security guard.
McPartlin was stationed nearby and responded to the scene. FCPD states that Martinez charged at McPartlin with the sign post and repeatedly attempted to use it as a weapon. After Martinez didn’t respond to McPartlin’s request for him to drop the weapon, the deputy shot him multiple times. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Natasha McKenna died after being shocked multiple times by a stun gun when a team of five deputies was attempting to restrain her for a transfer.
McPartlin is an 18-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and currently remains on administrative leave following the shooting.
