ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Montgomery County Police arrested 23-year-old Kwasi Sadler, he is accused of stabbing 72-year-old Linda Johnston to death in her Wheaton home.

Wednesday, Sadler appeared in court where the judge denied him bond after prosecutors laid out disturbing details about what detectives found at the scene.

“It is just very gruesome and troubling, it’s a horrific case,” said Ramon Korionoff with Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“This individual stabbed Ms. Johnston some 30 or 40 times in and around the torso and neck and face area.”

Prosecutors said the suspect knew a person who was renting the basement from the victim.  Prosecutors said Sadler broke in through a basement door, got into the house, and when the 72-year-old woman caught him, he killed her.

In court, prosecutors also said, the medical examiner determined the Johnston was alive for most of the stabbings.

Investigators said after murdering the woman, Sadler stole the victim’s purse and gold Prius.

Prosecutors said when detectives found Johnston’s Prius, there was blood on the seats.  That evidence paired with surveillance video of Sadler trying to use the victim’s credit cards, lead to his arrest.

Sadler is due back in court September 2, eventually, if he is convicted he will be facing life in prison.
