STAFFORD, VA – A 65-year old Uber driver was beaten and choked during an attempted robbery earlier this month, police say.

The man, who had only been driving for Uber a few days, suffered injuries to his neck and lower leg and required medical assistance. Police say the driver picked up the attacker, who was identified as a 16-year-old boy, near the Beth Sholom Temple on Lyons Boulevard. The boy redirected the man to a different destination, and attacked him with an “in-ground solar light fixture” and choked him. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 20.

According to officials,  the teen was charged with malicious wounding, strangulation, abduction and attempted robbery. He is currently being held at a juvenile detention center.

Police say that while the man was being attacked the car was moving and hit several mailboxes in the England Run neighborhood.
