Metro Police identify decedent in officer-involved shooting

WASHINGTON, D.C. – An officer-involved shooting on Monday in the 1300 block of 49th Street, Northeast, left one man dead. Officials have now identified the victim as 21-year-old Sidney Washington, Jr.

According to the Metro Transit Police, officers responded to the area after reports of a large crowd setting off fireworks. When they arrived, officers found Sidney Washington Jr. holding a weapon. After the officers identified themselves as police, the suspect fired several rounds at them before one of the officers was able to discharge his service weapon, striking the suspect. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The officer involved in the shooting was not injured.

The suspect’s weapon was recovered on the scene. This case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 202-727-9099.
