Spotsylvania animal shelter pets get “Reading Buddies”
SPOTSYLVANIA CO., VA – Homeless pets in Spotsylvania were treated to a day full of reading and entertainment at The Spotsylvania Second Chance Dog Rescue’s first “Reading Buddies” event.
The event took place at the Spotsylvania County Animal Shelter on Wednesday and was hosted by The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Animal Shelter and the Second Chance Dog Rescue Organization. The event was the first in a series of Reading Buddies events to be held at the Animal Shelter throughout the summer.
Children of all ages participated in the event by reading to the homeless pets, with assistance from Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Assistants and Officers and Second Chance volunteers. Some children even played instruments for the animals. The event featured several activities including a reptile presentation from an Animal Control Officer and writing letters to the pets.
Sheriff Roger L. Harris said, “The event gives children an opportunity to interact with the pets and offers socialization experience for the pets, as well. It’s a community oriented event.”
Reading Buddies events will be held every Wednesday from noon until 2 p.m. at the Spotsylvania Animal Shelter. Teenagers and kids are invited and strongly encouraged to participate in the events.
