Fairfax man charged with animal cruelty

FAIRFAX, VA – Police have arrested and charged a Fairfax man with animal cruelty.

Eryk Misrain Cruz, 19, of Alexandria was arrested and charged with misdemeanor Cruelty to Animals after the death of a mixed Pitbull breed female dog named “Zili”.

Police say on May 27 a male dropped Zili off at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter (FCAS). The dog was approximately 11 months old and extremely emaciated. She was transported to an emergency veterinarian and received medical treatment.

On June 1, Zili passed away due to her condition. A necropsy was completed and the results determined that she died from emaciation, dehydration and bacterial necrotizing enterocolitis.

Cruz was arrested on June 16 and is being held at the Adult Detention Center.
