Who knew a pair of bright red stilettos could teach a real lesson in love – of oneself and of others? It sounds over the top, but when you step into the Kennedy Center’s Opera House, Kinky Boots dares you to change your mind (and maybe even your fashion sense).

The musical, inspired by real events, tells the story of a struggling shoe factory in Northampton, England that is about to get stomped out of business. When a fabulous drag queen named Lola waltzes into the picture, all that changes.

The cast is full of energetic players, including Adam Kaplan, who plays the buttoned-up Charlie, the son faced with saving his father’s business.

However, it is newcomer J.Harrison Ghee who sparkles as Lola, mesmerizing audiences with a commanding stage presence and beautiful voice.

The Broadway blockbuster was written by Harvey Fierstein and Grammy Award-winning rock legend Cyndi Lauper. The show was a big success after winning 6 Tony Awards back in 2013.

Yet, now more than ever, the message of this show needs to be heard. Sadly, last week’s horrific attack in an Orlando nightclub proves that ignorance and hatred still grip parts of society – and with deadly consequences.

At its heart, Kinky Boots confirms that acceptance, tolerance and love can in fact make the world a better place.

Kinky Boots plays at the Kennedy Center’s Opera House from June 16th through July 10th.
