Dan Rather: Redskins….Yes or No?

A federal trademark board ruled today (Wednesday, June 18)  that the Washington Redskins nickname is “disparaging of Native Americans.”   In turn, the  team’s trademark protections should be canceled, a decision that applies new financial and political pressure on the team to change its name.

As a result of this ruling The Redskins announced that they will appeal.   It’s reported, that appeals process could take years.

Legendary broadcast journalist Dan Rather appears on DC50’s “NewsPlus with Mark Segraves” this Sunday morning, June 1, at 6A.   Rather discusses the controversy surrounding  the Washington Redskins name, plus the highlights and challenges of  his long time national and international career in news reporting.   Other guests include Buzz Burbank, local NPR radio personality who discusses local  treatment of veterans and marijuana reform.  Also, Jack Evans, longest serving member on the DC City Council – on council races for Mayor.  Willie Waffle reviews “One Million Ways to Die in the West.”

    If they force us to change it, how about the Washington Birds, with the appropriate universally recognized hand gesture as the logo? Just kidding, but I wish those putting so much pressure on this issue would please recognize how frustrating this is to the fans.
