Freezing for a Reason: DC50 Street Team at the Cupid’s Undie Run.

No Pants, No Problem: DC’s runners go pantless raising money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation

Saturday, February 15th-Runners filled the streets of Washington, DC for the Cupid’s Undie Run. The high on Saturday was 32 degrees and snow covered the ground.  It did not stop the dedicated runners from showing up in their undies. Runners stripped down and came to have fun.

Team costumes, check! Two women dressed as Batgirl and Catwomen said that they were at the race supporting a little girl named Nicole that has Neurofibromatosis (NF). “We are happy to be here today and raise money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation.”

Participants helped raise money and awareness for the Children’s Tumor Foundation and committed to ending NF. Prizes were given to runners depending on the amount raised. Runners could receive custom undies, embroidered bathrobes and more.

The VIP open-bar was open for participants who wanted pre-race sweets and treats.  The Cupid’s Undie Run felt it important to thank their runners for their support.

Participants’ quickly came out of the bar and started jumping up and down out of excitement or to keep warm.  Another group immediately began doing pushups on the chilly pavement.  The Washington National’s mascot, Screech, kicked off the race.  Screech took photos with runners and motivated the crowd.

The co-founder and COO, Bobby Gill, talked with DC50 about his motivation for starting the race and the clothing attire or rather the lack of clothing.  Gill, 28, said that his best-friend’s brother had NF and informed everyone that there is no cure for the disease.  He said that it is important that there is an awareness and support for children that suffer.  “If you are more modest and do not want to show skin that is okay. Everyone is welcome.”

The founders and organizers of the Cupid’s Undie Run, Bobby Gill and Brendan Harahan, were strategic when planning the event.  It is a mixture of 5’oclock happy hour and mini-marathoners.  Cupid’s Undie Run has participants’ engaged in an activity throughout the day; ultimately, having fun! Cupid’s Undie Run began in 2010 and has become a series of runs and festivities that are now in 27 US cities and Australia.
